How can the future come out of the moment of now? Time explained as a physical process of energy exchange.

When I first heard someone say that the future does not come out of the past, but comes out of the present moment. I thought it was madness, because it is so logical that we have a process of cause and effect from the past into the future. We have this at every level with a cosmological time line for the whole Universe and for every object and life form within the Universe. But when we look at this as an individual we find we are always in the present moment with the future unfolding relative to our actions. We are always in the moment of now in the centre of our own reference frame being able to look back in time in all directions at the beauty of the stars.
